The education and mentoring of future health practitioners play a critical role in their care of the ill and suffering. What does moral education look like? How can we develop a more unified approach to teaching and learning for societal significance? Dr. Kumagai will consider these questions and explore the concept of critical consciousness in teaching for equity and justice. He will show how stories, reflections, and dialogue can foster transformative learning and lead to transformation of the practice of medicine.
Arno Kumagai, MD is Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair for Education, Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He also holds the F.M. Hill Chair in Humanism Education at Women's College Hospital. His scholarly interests are in the use of narratives and humanities in medical education, dialogical teaching, and teaching for equity and social justice. Dr. Kumagai is the recipient of numerous teaching awards in teaching, humanism, educational innovation, and diversity.
